Visit Laurel, Mississippi Like a Local: The Home Town Insider’s Guide

How to Experience HGTV’s Home Town Like Someone Who’s Actually From There

I spent the first twenty years of my life in Laurel, Mississippi. Long before the camera crews and the magazine spreads, this was just home—where I grew up, went to school, and watched a sleepy downtown slowly wake up into something magical. These days, it feels a little surreal (in the best way) to walk through downtown Laurel and see it bustling with visitors who’ve fallen in love with it from their living rooms, thanks to HGTV’s Home Town.

Driving through the Historic District of Downtown Laurel, Mississippi

If you’re headed to Laurel for the first time—or even if you’ve been a dozen times—this guide is here to help you see it like a local. The kind of local who knows the best candle scent at The Scent Library (it’s Pear Cake), what to order at Pearl’s (fried chicken and mac, duh), and why Cane’s is an essential stop even if it’s technically fast food.

Let’s dive in.

Where to Eat in Laurel, Mississippi

The food in Laurel is one of its biggest draws—and locals take it seriously. Here's the rundown:

The Pearl Diner

You cannot come to Laurel and not eat here. Miss Pearl became a fan favorite after her episode on Home Town, and she backs it up with some of the best Southern cooking around. Order the fried chicken, lima beans, and mac and cheese. Add cornbread. Douse with Crystal’s hot sauce. Trust me.

Lee’s Coffee & Tea

This is the heart of downtown Laurel. I’ve probably eaten more grilled chicken sandwiches and creamy chicken and rice soup from Lee’s than I can count. It’s cozy, casual, and always hits the spot.

Shug’s Cookie Dough and Candy Bar

Need a sugar fix? Shug’s is where everyone flocks in the afternoons. Their cookie dough and sweets bar is full of joy (and probably a few sprinkles too).

Other favorites:

  • The Loft – Steak, pasta, and seafood

  • Philip’s Diner or PDI’s – A classic burger-and-shake stop

  • Café Le Fleur – Cajun/Creole vibes

  • Buzzard’s Roost – Happy hour, live music, and good drinks

  • Smokehouse – BBQ done right

  • Garcia’s Donuts – THE breakfast spot

  • Raising Cane’s – I know it’s a chain, but it’s basically my hometown comfort food.

Things To Do in Laurel, Mississippi (Besides Eat + Shop)

One of the best things about Laurel is that you don’t have to rush. Slow mornings and front porch hangs are kind of the vibe here.

Here are some easy, local-approved ideas:

  • Take a drive (or walk) through the Historic District – The homes here are dreamy.

  • Lauren Rogers Museum of Art – Beautiful collection, seasonal events, and great for a quiet afternoon.

  • Veteran’s Memorial Museum – A meaningful stop.

  • Bolton Home Town Tours – For the Home Town superfans.

  • Grab a picnic from Pearl’s or Lee’s and head to Trustmark Park – Great spot to people-watch, relax, and enjoy downtown.

Laurel is one of those places that sticks with you. It’s not just the charm or the show—it’s the people. It’s the way folks say hello, how shopkeepers remember your name, and how every visit makes you feel like you’ve come home.

I’ll always be proud to say I’m from here. I hope this guide helps you fall in love with Laurel the way I did—slowly, deeply, and forever.
